LESSON PLAN:

  • Subject/Topic - Social Studies- Jamestown

  • Duration - Approximately 1 hour

  • Materials -

    • Computers with internet access for each student

    • Headphones for each student (optional)

  • Standards -

    • Social Studies 5th Grade (2010) - â€‹

      • 4.) Determine the economic and cultural impact of European exploration during the Age of Discovery upon European society and American Indians.

      • •  Identifying significant early European patrons, explorers, and their countries of origin, including early settlements in the New World

      • Examples: patrons—King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella

      • explorers—Christopher Columbus

      • early settlements—St. Augustine, Quebec, Jamestown

  • Objectives - Students will compare cultures as they discover the surprising ways the Powhatan Indians and English settlers lived in early colonial Virginia in the re-created Powhatan village and James Fort located in Jamestown.

  • Introduction -

    • Teacher will show a picture of the Powhatan Indians and the English settlers, teacher will ask students what poor knowledge they know.  Then, the teacher will tell them that they will be virtually visiting Jamestown and exploring the Powhatan and settlers culture and life.  

  • Activities/ Procedures

    • After the introduction, the teacher will show students the home page of the virtual tour and tell them a little about Jamestown.​

    • The teacher will then demonstrate how to navigate the virtual tour and set forth any expectations for the virtual tour (raise your hand if there is a question, stay in your seat, etc)

    • The teacher will describe the assignment page; highlighting the instructions, rubric and assessment activity .

    • Students will begin working on the virtual tour while the teacher monitors and answer any questions needed.

    • Students will need to remember to take notes for the final assignment

  • Main Activities Assignment -

    • Students will use Empressor to create an online video about what your daily life as either a Powhatan Indian or an English Settler would look like demonstrating what they learned from the virtual tour.  Assignments will be graded using the rubric listed on the Assignment page of the virtual tour
